7th May 2008 - World Panchakarma Guide Goes Live!

Perfect Health for All

It has long been our sincere prayer to see Ayurveda uplifted and practiced in it's true potential around the globe. In support of this prayer Vedic Society is launching on this 7th day of May 2008 (Aksha Tritya) a guide for all on Panchakarma hospitals arond the world. Of all treatments in Ayurveda Panchakarma is both the most powerful and at the same time under-utilised. Most people associate Ayurveda with lifestyle, diet and herbal programs which are all effective but Panchakarma treatments allow the full force of Ayurvedic wisdom to express itself and the very imbalance and toxicity that cause diseases can be removed in a relativly short time.

Observing the need for a dynamic global guide on this subject based on the number of enquiries we get for people looking for good, authentic and affordable Panchakarma centres, we decided to setup the first comprehensive objective guide to Panchakarma centres out there. Patients and doctors can post their centres and patients can share their experience and testimonials. Our vision is simply that people can access the best centres and know what they are based on a global review system.

Wishing all good health and may this wisdom of Panchakarma (five-purifications of the physical, mental and suble body) spread to each corner of the world in their purest light and bring health, peace and bliss to all!

Vedic Society, 7th May 2008

Our vision is a very simple one:

  • The make people aware of Panchakarma and it's beautiful healing gifts that are a true treasure for all humanity.
  • To give genuine Panchakarma hospitals a platform to be found on the web and also a place where peopel can give feedback on their experience visiting such centres.
  • To encourage highest and most conscious standards in every aspect of Panchakarma Hospitals around the world.
  • To spread Pancharma treatments of highest quality to each country and make it available to the people there.

Why Panchakarma ?

Panchakarma quickly removes the very root of the disease, the ama or toxins that are the basic cause of ill health. It also strengthens the entire system (digestion, immunity, vitality) and prevents future diseases from taking root. Finally for those dedicated to spiritual life it clarifies the physiology allowing more vitality and energy for devoting one's life to the Divine.

Even if there is no major disease Panchakarma purifies the organs of digestion, elimination, skin, the functioning of the senses, the mental function an one experiences a beautiful lighness and clarity in all aspects are a correctly performed Panchakarma treatment.

It is our feeling that all should have access to this treatment of highest quality and authenticity and should experience the beautiful benifits of it's correct applications.

This Month's Featured Panchakarma Centres:

In the midst of Kerala's spice mountains is Sree Sankara Gardens. It is hard to imagine a more silent and beautiful place to regenerate body and mind. The environment is lush and green with ample birdlife ever present. Sree Sankara Gardens was a vision to create an Ayurvedic hospital in the midst of nature and silence of the highest standards of treatments that are part of a speicial family tradition linked to Kerala's Asthavaidya lineage. I was very kindly invited by the Sri Sanakara family to stay at their beautiful centre in Kumali and experience it's wonderful stillness, quiete and dedicated treatments and doctors. The treatment style is very much Kerali with the emphasis on the beautiful bodywork. Discover more...

Kutir Praveshika - Timeless Rejuvenation Therapy

"After thorough cleansing of the body one should reside in a specially prepared Kutir and take rasayana therapy for the prescribed time" - Charaka Rishi

In the chapter on rejuvenation Charaka the father of Ayurveda writes about a rejuvenation treament where one thoroughly cleanses the body with Panchakarma treatments and thereafter enters a specially designed Kutir or hut to rest and restore full vitality. Many stories abound in India of people undergoing this treatment and coming out physically and mentally considerably more youthful indeed. In the kutir one has a period to rest the senses as there is relativly little light, sounds or other stimuli. No ordinary food is taken except for fresh milk from a cow with new born calf and a special rasayana preparation which is made by the physicians according to the texts.

We feel a key to understand the ageing process and it's reversal are within understanding the means of action of this treatment. By resting the body deeply and taking rejuvenating substances in a dedicated way, the tissues literally reform revitelised and the substance that is the body becomes renewed.

Kutir Praveshika is availale on special request at a very few centres in India and the procedure takes a number of months of preparation and then the actual period in the kutir. It is also suited for those who are already comfortable in isolation and settled much within themself as during the kutir one does not have any further contacts with the world for a period of many weeks.

We are delighted to see a revival in this century of this treatment which had all but been forgotten and lost and a few small dedicated teams in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are working at reviving this beautiful and rare treatment.

ADD YOUR PANCHAKARMA HOSPITAL TO PANCHAKARMA GUIDE

Do you manage or are you the Vaidya at a Panchakarma hospital?

Let the world know about it by adding it the the Panchakarma Guide. The Guide is a free community health service aimed at sharing the beautiful wisdom of Panchakarma with the world at large. List your centre here so patients can find you. Any enquires coming from the Panchakarma Guide will be directed to you from our site via e-mail. [Suggest a centre now]

If you are or were a patient at a Panchakarma hospital you can also let us know, if you had a good experience and a healing experience the world should know as the more people that can get healing, the better for all. If you had an experience you feel could improve too, it would be good to post that to the guide too as the whole idea is that all the centres can be guided how they can improve their services and offerings. [Review a centre]

Treatment's great but how is the food?

There's little sense in spending 4 weeks cleaning your body when you're eating food that is not good for health. Take special care of avoiding the following foods during panchakarma religiously:

  • White flour
  • White sugar
  • Chillis
  • Tomatoes, potatoes, brinjal (nightshades)
  • Meat (unless it has been medicinally prescribed for a chronic ailment and specially prepared)
  • Leftovers (not freshly prepared foods)
  • Cold foods (ice cream, iced drinks or sweets)
  • Restaurant food
  • Foods prepared with refined oil
  • deep fried food
  • Heavy foods such as cheese, yoghurt and so forth

If the Panchakarma hospital you visited or plan to visit serve any of the above foods and do not take extra care or love with their consideration of an Ayurvedic diet (See 'Heaven's Banquet by Miran Hospodar' for a good guideline to a tridoshic Ayurvedic diet) then make sure to very clearly specify your dietary preferences or consider another centre. Food awareness is often the last to reach Ayurvedic hospitals as sometimes the doctors themselves do not follow these principals in their daily lives so always look at the diet served for patients before booking a treatment.

A note about organics:

If taking treatment in India, many of the vegetables and fruits are heavily sprayed with pesticides so try as much as possible to take treatment at a centre where the food is sourced from an organic supplier (there are many in major centres in India) or is home grown as much as possible. As much of the food taken during PK should be organic and as fresh as possible. There is no point in cleaning the body of heavy metals and PCB's when you are eating them at lunch and dinner.

HAVE YOU VISITED A PANCHAKARMA CENTER ?

If you have taken treatment at a Panchakarma hospital and you don't see it here, please let us know about it so we can add it to this guide. The guide is a community driven project and requires your insights and inputs. If you see a centre here you have visited, please review it (you can also review anonymously if you wish) so we can help others to find the best place for their health and evolution.

Would you like to volunteer as an editor?

Ayurveda Under Cultivation

An aranyaka is an ancient Vedic text that was composed in, and meant to be studied in, a forest. Though the texts of classical Ayurveda were written with urbanites in mind, they are verily aranyakas in spirit, for they carry to city dwellers an urgent "back to Nature" message. To better access that message let us for a moment remove ourselves from the metropolis, and imagine that we are seated under a spreading banyan tree that shades an Ayurvedic guru's ashram. The guru sits, dispensing teachings and healings, inspired by the tree's prana, guided by its intelligence, permitting the natural curative energy of the universe to flow through ...
